(10) ASAP Rocky: LiveLoveA$ap

Its been a real interesting year for hip-hop with a new insurgence of underground acts bringing a new sense of energy to the genre. I wouldn't say I'm a an expert on what's going on in hip-hop but for my money I was most impressed by A$AP Rocky's killer Mixtape Live Love A$AP. Stream of conscious style rapping mixed with dazed tripped out beats and syrup styled pounding rhythms create what is a thrilling Hip-Hop classic.

(09) Dávila 666: Tan Bajo

Brilliant Pop Garage rock act from Puerto Rico that makes fuzzed out Nugget Rock tracks that are just impossible to resist. It may not be the most game changing rock album but was easily one of the main records I kept visiting this year while enjoy sunny southern summer days. Party rock at its finest.

(08) Jürgen Müller: Science Of The Sea

Easily one of the more confusing releases of this year. Originally stated to be a reissue of a University of Kiel professor who while in the 1970's was studying oceanic sounds and then self taught himself how to play the synth and in turn made a record about the sea that he was studying. It has now however now been unveiled that this story was all a hoax which is honestly one of the most hilarious things I've heard in ages. However take away the hoax and this record itself has some of the most beautiful music I've heard all year. Synth ambient loop sounds very similar in vein to that of Emeralds. Great album for relaxing and watching the beauty of the world around you.

(07) Mutwawa: Mayan Mutations

Mutwawa is straight up this best group right now out in Richmond and I'm really happy to see that their dance freak fest of a live show has transfered well to the recorded format. Noisy pedal jockeying with hypnotic electronic loops and vocals growls creates spooky retro vibed dance sounds that are hard to not to like. Its twisted like most of the noise weird shit coming out of Richmond but has a great energy that makes it just brilliant and hard to deny.

(06) Black Pus: Primordial Pus

Brian Chippendale of Lightning Bolt continues on chugging along on his understated Black Pus project to crazed and and mind fucking results. Heavy intense percussion mix with unintelligible vocals delayed and distorted to the point of it being its own unexplainable instrument create some of the best testosterone heavy songs you will ever hear period. If you like the Lightning Bolt style then definitely check this em out, but if that group was never your thing then this one probably isn't up your alley.

(05) Liturgy: Aesthethica

Litrugy is back with another LP and just like the first time around these guys have taped into something quite good. By combining Black Metal with blissed out Rock tendencies you create a sound that is just mind shattering. With the crazy vocal growls of Hunter Hendrix with the hyper active drumming and Greg Fox makes some of the most original music I've heard in quite a while. Seriously fuck those who hate on this one, there just stubborn and missing out on something great.

(04) Eric Copeland: Waco Taco Combo

For the last couple years Eric Copeland has been putting out a record and every one is just as wind blowing as the last. Waco Taco Comob is no exception to this trend. Mutated noise pop songs being manipulate with tape loops and other noisy effects tocreate some of the most polished dance tracks you will hear this year (for real!).

(03) Julianna Barwick: The Magic Place

Continuing with her formula of church choir vocals and ambient loops, Julianna Barwick this year released what is her first true length LP and it is probably the best of her career. Adding from the formula above she has added new instruments and more complex rhythms to her sound to create some of the most peaceful and haunting music of this year.

(02) Times New Viking: Dancer Equired

Sure you can be a little bummed out with Times New Viking getting rid of the signature wall of fuzz sound, but its has been replaced a cleaner but still gritty sound bring to the for front the fine crafted no fuck given garage rock tracks that you always knew where there. Seriously don't be scared of by the change in sound and give this record another spin and I'm sure you'll see the brilliance of this one.

(01) Psychedlic Horseshit: Laced

Hands down best record of this year. No shit given lo-fi appeal being mushed with electronic ambient effects and hazed out tape loops creating the perfect bad trip for 2011. No words can really describe just how brilliant and mind blowing this record actually is so just go pick up a copy and give this headfuck a listen.

This should be a fairly common sense show here. Gull is a one man mask wearing drumming machine who always puts on an excellent show. I haven't actually seen The Cinnamon Band since they opened for Ariel Pink in Charlottesville back in 2008 and honestly don't remember much about them but I remember it being a solid drum rock duo thing. I also know they did a tour with Handsome Furs a couple years back so that right there is a great vote of talent right there.

This one looks be a super sick tea house show. Great Dads is now a Pysch Rock Drum hybrid featuring Adam Smith of Invisible Hand and Steve Snider of Golden Glasses that is sheer awesome energy. Also playing is Hume who where once a DC Freak Rock band who I now think are based in NYC and are real tight live. Lets be honest there aren't many shows of this caliber going on in Charlottesville this winter so I highly recommend checking this one out.

GRH Clubhouse is doing another show so you know this is gonna be something sick. Gull is headlining this and as you know he's one of the best in the drumming freak game around. Nurse Beach is also on the bill who rarely play shows yet alone shows in richmond so I'm psyched to see them bring there Noise Rock breakdowns to RVA. I have no clue who the other bands are but I'm fairly sure they will be something of interest.

Zoroaster is a very solid Sludge Metal act very similar in sound to Richmond's own Cough. I've heard lots of people talking about this act before so I'm fairly confident in the credibility of this act. All the other bands on the bill from my listening of them seem to fit nicely with the Southern Sludge style of Zoroaster so if your in the mood for a metal show this night then this is the place to be for sure.

I'll be honest I've never heard of Ghost Of Pop before but this should be a fairly solid Gallery 5 show. Young Adult Fiction, The Trillions and a bunch of other RVA locals are playing on the cheap (show is only 5 dollars) and will doing 90's backed garage rock. So if your in Richmond and looking for a chill rock show why not go to this one.

Gospel Girl is ex Black Kids musician Owen Holmes doing basement style folk songs in a similar vein of Calvin Johnson and other artists on that K Records but with more of a pop based sound. Its a real treat that he his playing such an intimate venue as the tea house so that in itself should already make this show going to but then there is more. Also playing is Charlottesville's own Manorlady who are now a two piece and do a real solid Shoegaze rock thing. Basically Charlottesville this is where you want to be this Saturday night, don't skip out on this one.

PC Worship is very awesome NYC based Experimental Pysch Rock band who is coming down to be play the Blue Nile. If that wasn't enough reason to come out to this show also Malatese is playing who is a very awesome Garage Punk band from Harrisonburg that from the the time I saw them but on a very enjoyable set. Take some time off studying and be at this one folks.

This show right here should be a real treat. Atlas Sound (aka Bradford Cox of Deerhunter) makes real incredible ambient singer songwriter soundscapes that are supposed to be real amazing live. Also playing are Balkans & Carnivoresm two lo-fi rock acts from Atlanta Georgia that both sound real sick to my ears. Definitely be at this one if you've got the cash and time, should be blast.

Woods is a super sick Brooklyn jammed out psych lo fi rock act that is well know to put on a very excellent live show and it is very awesome there coming through Richmond during this holiday season to play. Also playing is Richmond locals The Diamond Center who I haven't seen before but are supposed to be an excellent local act. Finishing off the bill is MMOSS who is very similar in style to Woods psyched out jam rock style and should fit real nicely on the bill

This one should be an interesting one. Buck Gooter is easily my favorite band in Harrisonburg hands down. Also playing is Le Mere Vipere who even though I've been living in Richmond I've actually never caught live before, but i hear there live show is solid. Also this show is at Little Girl which is super amazing restaurant in itself, so why not get some great local food and see some awesome music.

Lots of other bands also on the bill who I assume are also of interest. Lets be honest there isn't much going on in Norfolk these days so why not go out and check this out.

Very intrigued to see how this goes down. Never been to a show at Balliceaux before but the place is definitely one of the ritzier restaurants in the Fan that I know of, and as far as I know this is one of the first noise esc shows they have put on. Either way I'm very interested to see how Mutwawa works in a place of this magnitude. Also on the bill are other locals Fire Bison & The Milkstains, both seem to do solid rock projects from what I've heard from other people. This one looks to be an enjoyable way to spend your sunday night for sure, sadly though it is a 21 plus sort of thing which is frustrating.

Good slew of head fuck projects. Both Caves Caverns & Head Molt are playing who are 2 of my favorite projects coming out in Richmond right now, and I'm gonna assume if your reading this blog you read my name drop them countless times. SGNLS are a solid heavy noise rock project from Philly who I saw play a great set in Charlottesville back in March. Rounding up the bill is Buck Gooter, defiantly my favorite act coming out of Harrisonburg right now. Lots of great bands on the cheap at this one, should be a great way to spend your night for sure.

I'm extremely pumped for this show. Guardian Alien are Greg Fox of Liturgy new Psych Rock band which he plays drums in (He actually just left Litrugy if I remember correctly). His drum-work is easily some of the best around and I'm excited to see his new group in action. Also playing is Tungs who I've actually never seen before but I hear they do a good psych rock project. Rounding things up is Mutwawa, You know that sick noise hybrid of Jason Hodges (Bermuda Triangles ) and Gary Stevens (Head Molt), basically their sick as shit, just like this show is going to be.

I'm honestly not as knowledgeable on Jeffery Lewis as I should be. People keep on throwing the Anti-Folk tag on his work but I get more of a feel of a solid underground singer songwriter than anything else (you can debate there super related terms and are kind of the same thing but whatever). Also playing is Diane Cluck who is an amazing folk artists who just moved from Brooklyn to Charlottesville (who also I believe has done some recordings with Jeffery Lewis). Also playing is DBB Plays Cups which is David Baker Bensons singer songwriter sometimes solo sometimes group project. Not sure what he's doing for this show, or if he does yet but whatever it is it will be an incredible experience for sure.

This one looks to be a real promising punk show. Brown Sugar is a good sounding punk rocked backed Buffalo NY based band. Don't know much on Hounds Of Hate but I know they have members of Pissed jeans in it so they definitely have great credentials and am excited to see them play. Also playing are MOMS who are one of my favorite punk acts right now. Bratty 20 something boys making noise blasted punk rock music, what is honestly not to love about that folks?

This should be an incredible show. Future Islands seem to just never stop touring and are back again in Charlottesville. These guys are one of the best acts coming out of Baltimore right now and do a great new-wave infused electronic rock project with incredible deep crooning vocals. Also on tour with them is Ed Schrader's Music Beat who just like Future Islands are from Baltimore and are also just mind blowing. Amazing noise punk blasted rock music that you just need to see to believe. Buck Gooter are opening this show and are awesome so show up early and catch all of these bands.

NOVEMBER 1ST

This one looks to have the makings of a fairly solid rock show. Dan Sartain is a new name for me but from doing a little internet research sounds like he has been doing his thing for a while now and has even toured with lots of big acts including The White Stripes (say what you want about The White Stripes, that is real fuckin' cool). He does a Garage Rock Ramones esc sort of thing that is hard not to enjoy (Dan Sartain has canceled the show so now the show is going to be free and be The Milkstains & Bermuda Triangles only). Also on the bill is one of my favorite acts in Richmond Bermuda Triangles. If you haven't seen them before they do a tropical no wave punk face melting experience with crazy ass procession breakdowns. Also from what I hear this show is going to start as late as possible so people coming from the Screaming Females show at Gallery 5 should be able to catch most of the action, so basically you have no excuse to miss this.

NOVEMBER 1ST (RICHMOND) / NOVEMBER 2ND (HARRISONBURG)

I really don't feel like writing two separate write ups for the Screaming Female shows coming up so I'm gonna mush them into one write up. Screaming Females if you haven't heard them by now they do a real solid female fronted garage punk thing. They've come through Virginia multiple times and all I have heard from people is how great their live show (I myself keep on missing them for bullshit reasons). So thing time around I'm making sure to finally catch them play, maybe you folks should do the same.

NOVEMBER 3RD

This one right here should be a very interesting show. Honestly my knowledge on Virginia Beach is limited, hopefully there is some sort of underground music scene and culture that will make this show a success, but from my experience their the area seems like a plastic looking city with an overcrowded dirty beach and raved out kids who I cant comprehend. EIther way though even with this being all the way out in Virginia Beach it is definitely worth the drive to catch Japanese Noise Rock staple Melt-Banana. Saw them play back in 2007 in which they put on an extremely fun set. Long story short This has the making to be a real incredible show, so Virginia Beach you have a good show coming up for once, be at it.

NOVEMBER 6TH

This one should be a heavy loaded fun show. Torche (ex: Floor) does a sick sludge metal thing that was awesome when I caught them back at Best Friends Day a couple years ago. Im gonna assume there show is still good, so if your fan of them or Floor or other bands of that style this is one not to miss. Also playing is Part Chimp, a really good sounding UK noise rock act that I believe is on Mogwai's Rock Action Records label. Filling out the bill of awesome touring acts is The Coathangers, a group that just like the Screaming Females seems to come through Virginia a lot and yet I always miss them. There style is very reminiscent of Mika Miko and other bratty female fronted garage punk acts. So while this show may be a little pricey (12 Dollars) the amount of solid touring acts should definitely make this show worth your time and money.

Natural Child are my personal favorite act out of the sludge of Tennessee garage rock acts (think Jeff The Brootherhood, Pujol, etc). When I caught them live there performance had the same great energy that there records, and if i remember correctly ended slightly early due to the drummer breaking his drums. So if you've been enjoy the bucketload of garage rock acts coming to fruition then definitely check this one out. Real happy to see Aids Wolf is coming through Virginia again, I am a little surprised this is happening in Harrisonburg and not Richmond but whatever its still awesome. Aids Wolf are from Montreal and do some of the best Noise Rock around, very reminiscent of PRE, Arab On Radar and other loud heavy breakdown noise acts. Also playing is Unicorn Hard-On who do a real sweet Noise Dance hybrid of a thing. Filling out the bill is Buck Gooter, easily the most interesting and intriguing band of Harrisonburg. No way esthetic with crazy frontman antics and good old fashion noise rock. This is one of the best looking shows I've seen Harrisonburg having in quite a while, definitely go to this one folks if you can.

This looks to be a fairly solid show. Both Cough & Balaclava and are two of Richmond's best heavy hitting bands out right now (with this show also being Balaclava's record release show). Long story short, if your in the mood for a sick loud metal show then this is definitely the place to be.

Don't know as much about David Leibe Hart as I probably should. I know he used to do segments on the Tim & Eric Show in which he would do and say ridiculous absurd things, the typically theme of the show as far as I can tell. He has now started some sort of music project which to me seems very reminiscent of Wesley Willis and other outsider absurdist projects. Also playing this show is Flesh Control (aka Leo Heinzel) who is easily one of Richmonds best noise artists around. Show should be a fun weird way to spend ones dinner time thursday night.

Finally caught Johnny Corndawg a couple months back when he did a free in-store at the Charlottesville Plan 9. Really great slightly comical well polished nashville based country throwback singer songwriter stuff. Show is taking place at Al Hamraa which should be an interesting and enjoyable setting for this show.

Quote Unquote Peace Metal is the description I keep hearing get thrown around to describe Mega Bog. Not really sure if that is an accurate description of this solid sounding lo-fi jam project but it sure is an amusing one. Show looks to be an enjoyable laid back way to spend ones Friday night, and will be a good reason for me and probably many other to finally check out The Cellar Door. Supposedly though the shows are 21 plus so that if your underage just try to convince the door man to let you in if he X's your hands or get a fake ID if your badass like that.

My old house Magnolia is putting on what looks like a fairly solid Halloween show. Nurse Beach is a sweet hyper freak out punk rock act that seems to not play much anymore, so its really sweet that there still doing their thing and playing this show. Also on the bill is D.B.B Plays Cup which is David Backer Benson's every changing backed up singer songwriter experience. His live shows are always and incredible experience and is easily one of the most enjoyable acts coming out of Charlottesville. Show should be a fun ruckus making way to spend your Saturday night.

I realize this isn't in Virginia but its just such an incredible line-up of a show that I feel like that it is worth mentioning. If you haven't heard Boris before and reading this, stop whatever your dong and check them out. Legendary Japanese impossible to pin into one genre metal that puts on incredible live mind blowing live shows (there set in Charlottesville a couple year back was incredible and the stuff of legends) . Asobi Seksu is on the bill who do a really good blissed out dream pop sort of thing that I should probably listen to more about than I do. Rounding up the bill is Liturgy who is easily one of my favorite bands out right now. Really spastic fucked metal. Their live show is just mind blowing and is something that needs to be seen. Show should definitely be worth dealing with the bullshit that is DC (yo world I hate traffic).

I'll be honest when I say I don't know much about punk music. It's not to say that i'm not a fan of it - but its just not a genre that I am extremely knowledgeable on. I do realize however this is going to be a big and most certainly fun show and I'm excited to finally see both Government Waring and Cloak/Dagger for the first time. Also I believe all pre-sale tickets for this are now sold out and so now the only way to get into the show is to get one of the 75 remaining tickets that will be at the door. Also playing is Richmond's Young Adult Fiction which is fun 90s reminiscent indie rock that I've heard from friends has really stepped up their live show.

JASON AJEMIAN & THE HIGHLIFE

Jason Ajemian is a musician from our neck of the woods the foothills of the blue ridge in Waynesboro, VA. Lately he's been calling NYC his home and as we breath is on tour with his group The Highlife. Just saw them rip it hard in Charlottesville at a pop-up store called JSJ (johnsarahjohn) it was industrial and full of eccentric light and people. The show was originally gonna be a pool party, along with grilling food, and one of the members mentioned doing a cannonball while playing sax, we will have to wait.

The lineup was Jason Ajemian with bass guitar and minimal vocals, Peter Hanson with Saxophone, and Nick Jenkins with drum kit. It was one continuous stream of songs with a foreword mentioning the lose funk elements they would introduce. As far as my influences are concerned with jazz or funk, I still felt an immediate impression from their sound. Wasn't the most together performance but the laid back in and out funk injected jazz made it hard for me to sit still. was a varied set, with numerous songs that felt more realized and bombastic free feelings of improv or light textures. Some very impressive moments where things seemed to change fluently but in an instant. There was an encore performance of Jason solo on upright, which was at first very aggressive, with drumstick prepared strings and hitting both the strings the body and the music stand with another stick. Lots of interesting sound wrenched out of a bass, what came across was how comfortable he seemed with the instrument. He closed with a few borrowed songs, I felt like they were songs for his virginia friends and family.

Peter Hanson was a punk ass Ornette Coleman

and Nick Jenkins had a light touch and was very consistent and engaging

he also makes electronic music of his own in addition to drumming called

MR JENKINS

the basis for this music was written in an autoCAD program making 3D rooms and whole buildings and tunnels of written music. I did notice some perplexing sheet music they had at the show. Reminds me of the terry riley "scratch" sheet music stufffffff

I saw these gals open for The Thermals a couple years ago and got a "dont touch my shit" pin a few years prior to that I had recieved a free copy of the album so for some reason this band was in my world. The set I witnesses at the tea bazaar was of course dope, Super fun energy from this band and mucho personality which made their set so fun, and made it hard not to smile. i wasn't really familiar with the first portion of their set, new songs and they ran through them quick. But of course they were forced by "the fans" to play "the hits" ..classics like "shut the fuck up", "nestle in my boobies" and "DONT TOUCH MY SHIT". Basically they're a tight rock group with a cool sound :: bass riffs a la The Clash raegae Sandinista style keyboards and yelpy vocals were a total B-52's throwback, an at least some Shangri-Las in there, and of course you can compare them to riot grrrrrlll shit Le Tigre, Sleater-Kinney (main man jacob wolf pointed this out), Bikini Kill. but in the end its just coathangers. It was cool because one of the band members family came out and were coerced to participate in the show aka singing with them -- this band is like sour patch kids first they're sour then theyre sweet. I made that joke.

GREAT DADS opened up the show

killer! new york late 70's -ish weird "punk" throwback stuff, maybe along the lines of pere ubu, suicide, chrome, etc. Bombastic and quick gems as well as more subtle drones. Adam Smith is an excellent songwriter and has been trying out the ideas (under the name great dads) that he can't manifest in his badass real band INVISIBLE HAND. great dads is sometimes solo or with others. and continually changing but based in the same dirty heavy effected wierdo rock vein. Lately he's been doing what i call "ROCK SETS" teaming up with world class drummer Steve Snider (ex Cosmonauts Ruin, and sometimes with me in the all drums group CAT SEX). I like the collab a lot hope it continues. also funny anecdote during the set adam said "all these songs are about nothing" but I don't really believe that I never really got a chance to see the early stages of INVISIBLE HAND but I've seen some clips and it looks like the solo great dads stuff is tapping into that exploring some emotions he can really fit into his other groups more pop idiom. WORD. GETTIN HEAVY

tonight at the tea haus was a sick lineup of rock n' roll

i missed HOOKING UP because the show started way earlier than I anticipated // thats right it was a sunday

no worries though i'll be seeing hooking up play real soon at my house (MAGNOLIA) on the 20th of march :: event link --> here

so here's my thoughts on the show. (something we at witchmond should start doing more often)...

first band I caught was HEAVY CREAM

I saw them a while back at The Box in charlottesville where they pissed people off and continually called my friend a DEMON //weird but kinda awesome/expected behavior..and they're still dope. I like female fronted popppunk and they carved their style of bratty rock n roll rather nicely with a short loud fast set.

next was the ever anticipated LA SERA

my excitement was my downfall.. I saw Vivian Girls in 2009 at the outback lodge RIP in charlottesville + am quite enjoying her new album = loads of anticipation. Although i'm not gonna lie Katy Goodman is an irresistible force as a performer, the band couldn't quite hold up the vibe the idea of LA SERA has to me. which is some sort of beautiful effortless 60's pop revival. a little disappointing. BUT she did end with the same cover the vivian girls played last time she was in charlottesville. It definitely didn't suck, just didn't live up to my expectations.

after the show the more I thought about why I didn't like the la sera set the more I realized I would just rather hear noise music live than la sera live, I guess I just know what to expect// what has life come to??????///// anyway that's why I'm more than stoked for this fucking ridiculous mini noise fest going on at MAGNOLIA on tuesday the 8th of march ////////////////////////////

Romania may toughen its laws about witches

BUCHAREST, Romania (AP) — Legislation being debated in Romania would r require witches to get a permit and make it possible to fine or even imprison one whose prediction turns out to be false.

The draft bill has just started its way through Parliament in Romania, where witchcraft has been part of its culture for centuries.

On Jan. 1, Romania changed its labor laws to officially recognize witchcraft as a profession, angering some witches.

Vasile Bleotu, a Social Democrats lawmaker, said Tuesday that the Senate passed the draft legislation last week but it still must be approved by a financial and labor committee and Romania's Chamber of Deputies.

It also would require witches to provide their customers with receipts and bar them from practicing near schools and churches.
